Park, along with four local officials who spoke in favor of the statewide legislation: Albuquerque City Councilor Eric Griego, Santa Fe City Councilor Miguel Chavez, Clovis Mayor David Lansford, and Espanola City Councilor Joe Maestas. Beverly May from the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids also spoke about the nationwide trend of local and statewide smokefree legislation. Last night there were 12 television news stories in the Albuquerque area, as well as articles in the Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Farmington newspapers, and several radio news stories. Please keep your eyes and ears open for many more media stories to come. In a nutshell, HB 354 includes the following provisions: · Eliminates smoking in all enclosed indoor workplaces including restaurants and other workplaces (retail/office space, etc.) and public buildings, other than those establishments specifically exempted from the legislation (see below). The legislation also covers public transportation, including buses, as well as taxicabs. · Provides for smoking-permitted areas a reasonable distance beyond doorways so that a person must not have to pass through smoke to enter building, and beyond doors, windows and other ventilation intakes so that smoke does not enter building. · Exempts the following: ? Stand-alone bars ? State-licensed gaming facilities, casinos and bingo parlors ? Private clubs ? Retail tobacco stores ? Limousines for hire ? Private homes whenever not being used commercially to provide child care, adult care or health care ? Up to 25% of hotel/motel rooms to be designated for smoking ? Designated outdoor smoking areas (patios, etc.) · Allows local governing bodies to enact stronger provisions than the state law. · Provides penalties for violations include civil fines of $100 ranging up to $500 for repeat offenders.
