ABOUT US

BUY NOTHING DAY 2006

Every November 25, for 24 hours, we remember that no one was born to shop and we make a small choice to participate by not participating. We call it Buy Nothing Day, and judging by the huge successes seen all across the globe last year – with thousands of activists and fed-up citizens taking part in dozens of countries – this year’s festival of restraint could be the biggest yet.

If you’ve never taken part in Buy Nothing Day, or if you’ve taken part in the past but haven’t really committed to doing it again, consider this: 2006 will go down as the year in which mainstream dialogue about global warming finally reached its critical mass. What better way to bring the Year of Global Warming to a close than to point people in the direction of real and effective alternatives to the unbridled consumption that has created this quagmire?

Email ADBUSTERS as your plans, posters and photos start to come together. ADBUSTERS will try to feature the best and brightest as this year’s Buy Nothing Day takes shape here. In the meantime, take a moment to check out what happened in 2005 to see if you can get inspired.

CHALLENGING THE DEBT INDUSTRY IS NOW AVAILABLE

Challenging the Debt Industry (Cómo Desafiar a la Industria de Deudas en español) is NMMLP’s new multimedia resource which combines media literacy with financial education. Using this DVD-ROM, you can learn about credit card debt, payday loans, title loans, rent-to-own and the advertising of these industries. This DVD-ROM is designed for use in a classroom or with a community group to teach others about the connections between media, consumerism and predatory lending.

Challenging the Debt Industry includes a 38-minute video documentary, over 60 media examples on credit cards, loans, consumerism, etc., educational resources such as lesson plans, graphs, a discussion guide for each video chapter and handouts.  The video documentary, classroom resources, several media examples and DVD menus are also available in Spanish.

Thanks to a grant from the New Mexico McCune Foundation, this resource is available for free to NM residents through June 30, 2007 and residents outside of New Mexico can purchase it online at www.nmmlp.org or by calling 505-828-3129.  You can also pick up the DVD-ROM at one of NMMLP’s upcoming screenings at Albuquerque Academy on November 16th or on January 31st, 2007 at the University of New Mexico - an event co-sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center at UNM.  Check our website for details on the documentary screenings.

WIN BIG $$$ IN THE SCRIPT & STORYBOARD CONTEST

The Talk Back to Big Tobacco! Script & Storyboard Contest is off to a great start.  Contest flyers have been mailed to every middle school and high school in New Mexico (you can download a flyer here) and press releases and PSAs have been sent to media outlets around the state.  Over a hundred entry forms have been downloaded from the contest website so far, and we’re looking forward to receiving the first entries soon!

The contest is a new NMMLP project funded by the New Mexico Department of Health’s Tobacco Use Prevention & Control Program (TUPAC).  We’re looking for radio scripts and TV storyboards for 30-second ads written by New Mexico youth, aimed at preventing tobacco use among young people.

The contest website now features real tobacco counter marketing ads you can watch, listen to and discuss, plus resources to help you write a winning script or storyboard.

The deadline for entries is Dec. 31.  In January, we’ll pick eight winners to receive $500 prizes! For more info, complete contest rules, entry forms and more, visit www.talkback.nmmlp.org
